The Stillwater Series
The Stillwater Series
Finally ready for release in 2025, The "Stillwater Series" is the result of two years of building and testing a new range of rods aimed at the modern and increasingly popular small Stillwaters often run by small angling clubs or operating as day ticket venues.
Taking inspiration from a collection of waters run by my own local Angling club, this collection of rods has been designed and built to cater for a wide variety of fishing situations often encountered on these small heavily stocked pools.
Before describing the individual rods which make up the "Stillwater Series", it is worth considering the type of waters the rods are aimed at. I'm sure they will be familiar to anglers in all parts of the country.
The waters my own particular Angling club control all tend to be small to medium sized Stillwaters, some natural others man made. Typically they are located on farmland or in the countryside, making them pleasant environments, to while away a few hours.
Most of these pools tend to be quite heavily stocked meaning action can be fast and furious. As is the case on many waters these days the fish stocks tend to be made up of primarily small to medium carp, which can usually be relied upon to provide some action regardless of conditions. However most of these pools also contain an abundance of other species which can be just as rewarding and sometimes even more challenging and rewarding to fish for. my local waters hold Roach, Rudd, Perch, Tench and Bream which are often ignored by many Anglers but can provide great sport for those not wishing to catch an endless stream of Carp.
With this in mind the "Stillwater Series" has been developed to provide a rod for all occasions on this modern type of water. Due to the small and often intimate nature of these water, The "Stillwater Series" of rods are relatively short, light rods. The Stillwater No.1,2 and 3 are three piece float rods of varying lengths and strengths to cater for all types of float fishing alongside the R. Burns Grebe which is a two piece rod designed for light legering and stalking.
The "Stillwate Series" of rods have been thoroughly tested for the last two years by myself and friends on a variety of different waters. Often these rods have been pushed well beyond their intended limits, many Carp well above the intended size range have been landed all with relative ease. The highlight though, was undoubtedly, the capture of a 12lb Barbel landed on the Grebe when I decided it would be the ideal Chub rod on my local river last winter.
Please see below for the full range of the Stillwater series and a detailed description of each rod.

The Stillwater Series - No. 1
The Stillwater No.1 has proved to be a hugely versatile rod.
At 8ft in length and of three piece construction, it has been designed as an all round float rod.
Its fine tip and relatively fast action make it ideal for fishing in the margins.
The fast action of the tip section makes hitting fast bites easy, whilst it retains plenty of power in the butt section to tame surprisingly large carp.
This rod has proven excellent for when you just don't know what might come along next!

The Stillwater Series - No. 2
The Stillwater No.2 is the dedicated "silvers" rod in the series.
At 9ft in length and of three piece construction, it is dedicated to fishing for the often abundant stock of Roach, Rudd and Perch which are often neglected by other anglers.
It is light in weight as well as action, making it ideal to hold whilst float fishing the margins, where action can often be fast and furious.
Its fine tip section allows fine line and small hooks to be used with confidence, whilst gaining maximum pleasure from the smaller species.

The Stillwater Series - No. 3
The Stillwater No.3 is a 9ft three piece float rod.
Slightly heavier in construction than the N.2 this is a through actioned rod developed with Tench and bream in mind whilst still retaining the sensitivity to enjoy smaller fish and also the power to tame the odd Carp.
This rod has been proven to be very versatile, and has often been employed for trotting on my local small rivers and streams when a longer rod has proven cumbersome.

The Stillwater Series - The Ryan Burns Grebe
The R. Burns Grebe has been an absolute triumph since I first designed and built the first prototype.
This 8ft two piece rod was designed with a fast action to provide a fine sensitive tip and a powerful butt section.
It's intended purpose was primarily stalking Carp in the margins. It's fine tip enables freelined baits to be cast easily and accurately, whilst it's strength in the butt section has enabled surprisingly large fish to be landed with ease.
During the two years I have been testing the "Stillwater Series" of rods, The Grebe has proven to be one of my favourites. Not only for it's intended purpose of stalking Carp, but has also been proven to be an excellent rod for touch ledgering on smaller rivers. More recently it has been put to service floatfishing worms beneath a "bob" style float for big perch.
As a further development i have designed a heavier through actioned tip to convert this rod into a heavier carp rod, for occassions where the fish are larger, or the water being fished is weedy or snaggy. The "twin tip" version of this rod is a true Allrounder.
